I often get asked why I started a business that at its core, has a purpose of helping young people who were aging out of foster care. The short answer:  how could I not!

When I learned that over 50% of youth in the foster care community end up homeless, incarcerated or trafficked within 18 months of leaving the system, a response was mandatory.  Upon learning of the statistics, I was angry, shocked and incensed that a system was so broken, that it was failing at its purpose. Something needed to be done.

Why me?  Why not me?  At some point in our lives, we are prompted to reflect, to really look inside ourselves and ask ‘why we are doing what we are doing.’  It was at this point that my Faith journey became real. Did I really believe what I professed to believe? I needed to find out. And that became my Why.

The question we asked next was ‘what if?’

If the system was really that broken, should we try to “fix” the system?  What if we stopped thinking about the system and started thinking about the people. Would we make different choices?  Could we address the fundamental needs of the foster community by starting a company? What if we failed? There were so many unknowns, so many concerns.

But, what if we succeeded? What if we actually created a business that changed outcomes, made a difference in the lives of kids from foster care AND made money?  What if, the culture of caring and love became our competitive advantage?

So take a minute to reflect.

What would our world look like – how could lives be changed – if we all found our Why and took actions on our What if’s?
